Op donderdag 12 februari verwelkomen we twee invloedrijke Europese denkers: Arnaud Orain, economisch historicus wiens werk ons begrip van de evolutie van het kapitalisme herziet, en Caroline de Gruyter, bekroond journalist en scherp waarnemer van de Europese politiek en de liberale orde. Zij spreken naar aanleiding van de Nederlandse vertaling van Orains nieuwe boek, The Finitude of the World: Boundless Capitalism from the Seventeenth Century to Today. In dit werk – met een voorwoord van De Gruyter – betoogt Orain dat hoewel de neoliberale droom van ononderbroken groei is vervaagd, het kapitalisme zelf springlevend is. De huidige fase is niet nieuw maar onderdeel van een terugkerende historische dynamiek: wanneer de wereld als eindig wordt ervaren en hulpbronnen beperkt zijn, verschuift het kapitalisme naar een agressieve modus van snelle toe-eigening en uitbuiting. We zien dit “Finitude Capitalism” nu in de privatisering en militarisering van de zeeën, in de opkomst van monopolistische handel, en in de opmars van grote private bedrijven die quasi-soevereine controle claimen over fysieke en digitale ruimte.
Hoe is deze verschuiving van liberaal naar predatief kapitalisme ontstaan? Wie profiteert – en wie verliest – in deze race naar de bodem? Wat betekent dit voor Europa’s economische en geopolitieke toekomst? En kunnen we het tij nog keren?

Arnaud Orain is econoom en historicus, gespecialiseerd in de evolutie van het kapitalisme, economisch denken en historische economische systemen. Sinds 2023 is hij directeur studies aan de École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Parijs (EHESS). Hij schreef diverse boeken, waaronder ‘The Life of Ideas: The Politics of Utopia’, ‘Les savoirs perdus de l’économie: Contribution à l’équilibre du vivant’ en ‘Le monde confisqué: Essai sur le capitalisme de la finitude (XVIᵉ – XXIᵉ siècle)’.
Caroline de Gruyter
Caroline de Gruyter is auteur en journalist, gevestigd in Brussel. Ze is correspondent Europese Zaken voor NRC Handelsblad, lid van de European Council on Foreign Relations en columnist voor Foreign Policy en De Standaard. Ze besteedde meer dan twintig jaar aan het verslaan van Europa, vanuit verschillende hoeken van het continent. In haar aankomende boek ‘Zondagskinderen: Europeanen, oorlog en vrede (februari 2026) onderzoekt De Gruyter wat Europa leert – of vergeet – wanneer vrede niet langer vanzelfsprekend is.

Finitude Capitalism: Neoliberalism’s Predatory Turnwith Arnaud Orain & Caroline de Gruyter
On Thursday, February 12, we welcome two of Europe’s most influential and thought-provoking public intellectuals: Arnaud Orain, renowned economic historian whose work reshapes our understanding of capitalism’s evolution, and Caroline de Gruyter, award-winning journalist and one of the sharpest observers of European politics and the state of the liberal order. They will speak on the occasion of the Dutch translation of Orain’s new book, The Finitude of the World: Boundless Capitalism from the Seventeenth Century to Today. In this groundbreaking work – introduced with a preface by de Gruyter – Orain argues that while the neoliberal dream of uninterrupted growth has faded, capitalism itself remains very much alive. Its current phase is not unprecedented but part of a recurring historical dynamic: when the world is perceived as finite and its resources limited, capitalism shifts into a violent mode of rapid capture and exploitation. We now see this “Finitude Capitalism” at work in the privatisation and militarisation of the seas, in the rise of monopolistic and rentier trade, and in the encroachment of massive private companies claiming quasi-sovereign control over physical and digital space.
So how did this shift from liberal to predatory capitalism emerge? Who stands to gain – and who loses – in this zero-sum landscape? What are the implications for Europe’s economic and geopolitical future? And can we still turn the tide?

Arnaud Orain is an economist and historian, specializing in the evolution of capitalism, economic thought, and historical economic regimes. Since 2023 he serves as director of studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris (EHESS). He is the author of numerous books, including ‘The Life of Ideas: The Politics of Utopia’, ‘Les savoirs perdus de l’économie: Contribution à l’équilibre du vivant’ and ‘Le monde confisqué: Essai sur le capitalisme de la finitude (XVIᵉ – XXIᵉ siècle)’.
Caroline de Gruyter
Caroline de Gruyter is an author and journalist based in Brussels. She is a European Affairs correspondent for the leading Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad, a member of the European Council on Foreign Relations and a columnist for Foreign Policy and De Standaard. She spent more than twenty years covering Europe, from different corners of the continent. In her forthcoming book ‘Zondagskinderen: Europeanen, oorlog en vrede (February 2026) de Gruyter examines what Europe learns – or forgets – when peace can no longer be taken for granted.
