Op zaterdag 14 maart verwelkomen we twee van de scherpzinnigste denkers van vandaag over technologie, kapitalisme, politieke verbeelding en de opkomst van populistisch-rechts: Quinn Slobodian (Crack-Up Capitalism, Hayek’s Bastards) en Ben Tarnoff (Internet for the People, Voices from the Valley).
Samen bespreken ze hun nieuwe boek Muskism: A Guide for the Perplexed. In dit langverwachte werk onderzoeken ze Elon Musk niet als individu, maar als symptoom en belichaming van ons postliberale tijdperk. Musk is geen storing in het systeem—hij is het systeem. Zijn wereldbeeld belooft soevereiniteit door technologie: plug in, power up en word zelfvoorzienend. Maar hoe meer je verbindt, hoe meer hij je bezit.
Als het fordisme het kapitalisme van de twintigste eeuw definieerde, zou Muskism wel eens dat van de eenentwintigste eeuw kunnen definiëren. Het fordisme hielp de verzorgingsstaat opbouwen. Musk breekt hem af. Hij gedijt op afhankelijkheid terwijl hij vrijheid predikt. Zijn raketten draaien op subsidies; zijn satellieten besturen het slagveld; zijn sociale netwerken trainen de AI die ons traint. Muskisme verkoopt zichzelf als de toekomst, maar verankert eeuwenoude hiërarchieën. Het biedt autonomie voor sommigen en uitsluiting voor anderen. Het is libertarisch maar door de staat gevoed, pro-natalisme maar anti-immigratie, futuristisch maar reactionaire.

If Fordism defined the capitalism of the twentieth century, Muskism may define the twenty-first. Fordism helped build the welfare state. Musk undoes it. He thrives on dependence while preaching freedom. His rockets run on subsidies; his satellites run the battlefield; his social networks train the AI that trains us. Muskism sells itself as the future, but entrenches age-old hierarchies. It offers autonomy for some and exclusion for others. It’s libertarian but state-fed, pro-natalist but anti-immigrant, futurist but reactionary.

Nuria Ribas Costa is a Spanish Journalist and Jurist based between Rotterdam and Ibiza, her homeland. Formerly at OMA, she currently works as an independent researcher and policy analyst in the fields of urbanism and culture. She is part of urbanism agency Humankind, research group Vigla, the Center for Music Ecosystems and De Dépendance. She is interested in the relationships rural-urban, the politics of space and land and intersectionality in urbanism.
