On 21 November platform for city culture De Dépendance welcomes Michèle Lamont, an acclaimed Harvard sociologist, to discuss her new book ‘Seeing Others: How Recognition Works and How it Can Heal a Divided World’ at De Sportschool, Rotterdam-Charlois.
Michèle Lamont has spent decades studying inequality and how belonging shapes quality of life, and her work is praised by the likes of Thomas Piketty, Arlie Russell Hochschild, Robert D. Putnam, and Henry Louis Gates Jr. In her new book, Lamont argues that neoliberal values like self-reliance and competition have deepened divides by stigmatizing the working class, people of color, and LGBTQIA+ communities, and calls for a shift toward shared humanity, advocating for values that break down boundaries and honor diverse ways of living.
This event will be in English. Drinks from 19:30.
